Importance Of Fuel Storage Tank Maintenance Highlighted

Companies making good use of tank gauges and similar will no doubt already know how important it is to ensure storage tanks are kept in good condition and replaced as and when required.

But now this particular point is being driven home over in the US, where a company has just been fined $80,000 for illegally installing an old and corroded fuel storage tank – and hiding it in a bid to fool inspectors, the Star Tribune reports.

The fine is in fact one of the biggest to have ever been issued by the Minnesota Pollution Control Agency against a small company, with Fitzgerald Excavating and Trucking now agreeing to comply with state laws in relation to the use of fuel storage tanks.

This case comes at a time when the state of Minnesota is finding it hard to fund the inspections and clean-ups required as a result of years of leaking and abandoned underground storage tanks, with around 31,000 to be found across the region.

For businesses in the UK, you can find all you need to know about oil storage regulations on the official government website. You must adhere to the rules on storing oil if you have an oil storage container that has a capacity of 201 litres or more at a public sector building (such as a hospital or leisure centre) or a business (which includes marinas).

Storage containers include oil drums and fixed tanks, mobile bowsers, some kinds of generator and transformer, and intermediate bulk containers. If you don’t follow the requirements, you could be fined or prosecuted.
