Government Launches ’Game-Changing’ Food Waste Fund

The role of waste food material in anaerobic digestion processes puts your system’s pressure relief valve to work, however, the government has launched a new fund to encourage food that is still edible from being sent to waste in AD plants.

While it may affect the amount of material coming through the door, it’s an important step in addressing sustainability in our food industry, as the fund looks to target redistribution companies to help them overcome the financial hurdles that stand in their way from delivering this food to those who want or need it.

It’s the first funding round of a £15 million project announced by the Environment Secretary last year, according to Gov.uk, which is targetting surplus food waste from the manufacturing and retail industries specifically.

At present, 43,000 tonnes of food is redistributed by companies form these industries each year, however, it’s believed that a further 100,000 tonnes, which is edible, is sent away for the likes anaerobic digestion or animal feed.

Environment Minister Thérèse Coffey said that it was time the government stepped up to help the organisations already fighting the good fight: “We want to build on the great work already being done by businesses, charities and volunteers. Perfectly good food should be on people’s plates and not unnecessarily discarded.”

This scheme supports the government’s Resources and Waste Strategy, outlined last month, which will see the introduction of annual reporting of wastage for food businesses. They are also seeking power to introduce mandatory targets if progress to reducing the amount of wastage is not forthcoming.
